Day Trips

Hey there, I'm Bernie and let me tell you about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! This place is truly a stunning natural wonder that spans across Tennessee and North Carolina. The park boasts a vast expanse of wilderness with a wide array of flora and fauna, including over 1,500 species of plants and countless animals. It's a perfect destination for families looking to spend quality time together in nature and enjoy a range of outdoor activities.
Now, on the North Carolina side of the park, families can enjoy a variety of adventures, such as hiking and fishing, camping and wildlife viewing. The park has an abundance of trails that cater to hikers of all levels, ranging from short, easy walks to challenging backcountry treks. It's a true outdoor enthusiast's paradise!

Now, let me tell you about some of the amazing hiking trails on the North Carolina side of the park. One of the most popular hiking trails is the Deep Creek Trail, and for good reason! This moderate 4.6-mile hike takes you through lush forests and along the banks of babbling streams. It's perfect for families with young children, as there are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way.

Oh, and I can't forget to mention Thoms Branch Falls! It's a stunning waterfall located just off the Deep Creek Trail. It's a great spot to take a break and cool off during your hike. And if you're feeling adventurous, many visitors love to float the creek here in front of the waterfall. It's a unique and exciting way to experience the beauty of the park.

But if you're looking for a bit more of a challenge, I highly recommend the Alum Cave Trail. This 5.5-mile trail is a must-see for any hiking enthusiast! It takes you through a stunning landscape of rocky cliffs, waterfalls, and ancient forests. And the best part? The trail ends at the Alum Cave Bluffs, a breathtaking rock formation that offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Trust me, it's a view you won't want to miss!

So, whether you're looking for a leisurely hike through the forests and streams or a more challenging trek to see some of the most stunning landscapes in the park, the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has something for everyone.

With over 850 miles of hiking trails, there is something for everyone, from historic structures to stunning waterfalls. To truly experience the beauty of the Smokies, hiking is a must on your vacation!

For an easy hike that offers spectacular views, I suggest heading to Clingmans Dome. It’s just a half-mile hike to the top of the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower, but be prepared for the steep ascent due to the elevation gain. At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! The tower provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the Smoky Mountains, and on clear days, you can see as far as 100 miles. This is one of the most popular spots to watch a Smoky Mountain sunrise or sunset. The trails leading to the top are challenging, but the effort is worth it for the breathtaking views you'll experience.

Let me tell you about one of my favorite activities in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - fishing! There's nothing quite like casting a line into the pristine mountain waters and waiting for the fish to bite. With over 2,000 miles of streams and rivers teeming with trout, it's no wonder that fishing is such a popular activity in the park.

One of my favorite spots for fishing on the North Carolina side of the park is the Oconaluftee River. Not only is it a picturesque river that winds its way through the heart of the park, but it's also a great place to spot elk! That's right, while you're fishing, you might just catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures along the riverbank. And if you're lucky, you might even reel in a rainbow or brown trout, or maybe even a smallmouth bass. It's all part of the adventure of fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains.

So, whether you're an experienced angler or just looking to spend a relaxing day on the river with your family, fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an experience you won't soon forget. Come and join me in casting a line into these beautiful mountain waters and see what kind of fish and wildlife we can spot along the way!

Camping is another fantastic way to experience the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park has a variety of campgrounds, ranging from developed sites with amenities like showers and flush toilets to more rustic backcountry campsites. Families can pitch a tent, cook over a campfire, and spend the night under the stars, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the wilderness.

One popular campground on the North Carolina side of the park is the Deep Creek Campground, located near the start of the Deep Creek Trail. This campground offers easy access to hiking trails, fishing streams, and other outdoor activities, making it the perfect base camp for families looking to explore the park.

As an RV enthusiast and nature lover, one of my favorite ways to experience the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is by camping. And let me tell you, there's nothing quite like rolling into the Smokemont Campground, located near to the visitor's center, and hooking up your RV right in the middle of nature and wildlife.

The park offers a variety of campgrounds, from developed sites with all the amenities you could need, like showers and flush toilets, to more rustic backcountry campsites. But for families looking for a great campground on the North Carolina side of the park, the Smokemont Campground is a top choice. With easy access to hiking trails, fishing streams, and other outdoor activities, it's the perfect base camp for exploring all the park has to offer.

Whether you prefer pitching a tent or bringing your RV like me, spending the night under the stars and surrounded by the sights and sounds of the wilderness is an experience like no other. So come and join me at the Smokemont Campground and let's explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park together!

Wildlife viewing is another highlight of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park is home to a wide variety of animals, including black bears, deer, countless bird species, and the king of the mountain, elk. Families can venture out on a wildlife watching expedition, keeping their eyes peeled for glimpses of these magnificent creatures.

One of the best places to see elk on the North Carolina side of the park is the Cataloochee Valley, a remote and scenic valley that is home to a large herd of elk. Families can drive or hike through the valley, watching for the elk as they graze and play in the fields and meadows.

In addition to wildlife viewing, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also a great place to learn about the region's history and culture. The Mountain Farm Museum is a must-see attraction for families, as it offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the Southern Appalachians. The museum is located right next to the visitors center near Cherokee where you can also see elk in the wild.

As someone who loves horseback riding, I highly recommend taking a guided horseback ride in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From mid-March through late November, four concession horseback riding stables offer scenic rides lasting from 45 minutes to several hours on park trails. The rates start at $30 per hour, but be aware that weight limits and age restrictions may apply, so it's best to call the stable for more information before booking your ride.

If you prefer to ride your own horse, the park has about 550 miles of designated horseback riding trails that you can explore. However, it's important to note that horses are only allowed on designated trails and backcountry camping is only allowed at designated campsites. The park's trail map indicates which trails are open to horseback riding and provides information about backcountry camping and permit requirements. So, make sure to obtain a copy of the map and familiarize yourself with the park's rules and regulations before hitting the trails.
