All Aboard the Christmas Train: The Polar Express Adventure!
Updated: 12/02/2024 • Bernie Gilchrist
Ho, ho, ho! Gather ‘round, dear friends, for a tale straight from the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Santa here—fresh from the North Pole and feeling extra jolly. This year, the resilient folks of Bryson City, North Carolina, have reminded us all what it means to believe in a little magic and a lot of hope. After Hurricane Helene roared through like a grumpy elf late to toy-making duty, these mountain folk dusted off their boots, patched the roads, and lit up their town brighter than Rudolph’s nose. And now, they’re ready to welcome you aboard a train bound for the North Pole itself!
Yes, that’s right! It’s time to don your coziest pajamas and join us for THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride, a journey so magical, it could only be dreamed up in a child’s imagination—or by yours truly, Santa Claus. So, grab your golden ticket, my dears, and let’s paint this wintry picture together.
A Ticket to Belief
From the moment you arrive at the Bryson City Depot, the spirit of Christmas embraces you like a warm hug. The depot sparkles with twinkling lights, festive garlands, and the laughter of children buzzing with anticipation. As the train steams into view, puffing clouds of snow-like smoke into the crisp mountain air, you can’t help but feel a flutter of excitement.
Climb aboard one of the beautifully restored train cars and be whisked away into the enchanting world of Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved tale. Your adventure begins with the familiar notes of “Hot Chocolate” (yes, the very song!) as cheerful chefs dance through the aisles delivering mugs of rich cocoa and cookies to all. Don’t forget your souvenir mug—it’s a keepsake for the memory vault!
Through the Woods to the North Pole
The train chugs its way through the wintry wilderness, illuminated by thousands of glimmering lights. Outside your window, the landscape is transformed into a snow globe come to life, and inside, a storyteller reads aloud from The Polar Express as you follow along. The children’s eyes are as wide as saucers as the story unfolds, and even the adults find their inner child peeking out.
And then—oh, the wonder!—you arrive at the North Pole. A village glowing with 62,000 dazzling lights greets you. Reindeer are ready for takeoff at the Flight Training Airfield, and Santa himself is waiting to hop aboard the train. The moment is electric, like the spark of a sleigh bell’s jingle.
Santa’s Gift to Believe
As the train begins its return journey to Bryson City, Santa, with his jolly laugh and twinkle-bright eyes, makes his way through each car. Every child receives the first gift of Christmas: a gleaming silver bell, straight from my sleigh. These bells don’t just ring—they sing. But remember, only those who truly believe can hear their magical chime!
Carols fill the air as the train gently sways along the tracks. Families sing together, hearts full of Christmas cheer. It’s not just a train ride—it’s a memory woven into the fabric of your Christmas story.
More Magic Awaits in Bryson City
Oh, but the magic doesn’t end when the train pulls back into the depot! Bryson City itself is a winter wonderland, with over 200,000 LED lights adorning every nook and cranny. Stroll through town to visit the Appalachian Toymaker, whose wooden toys are crafted with old-world charm. Pop into the Visitor Center for cookies and hot chocolate, or snap a family photo by the iconic red caboose.
Need a last-minute gift? Browse the town’s cozy shops, where you’ll find everything from handcrafted treasures to sweet treats. And when hunger strikes, there’s something for every palate—from hearty mountain fare to fine dining. (Tip: make reservations during Polar Express season to skip the wait!)
Plan Your Journey
The Polar Express runs through December 31, departing multiple times daily from the Bryson City Depot. Whether you choose First Class with plush seating and souvenir totes or Premium Crown Class with its nostalgic wooden interiors, you’re in for a magical ride. But hurry! Tickets sell faster than a flying sleigh on Christmas Eve.
The Spirit of Christmas
So, my dear friends, won’t you join us? This isn’t just a train ride; it’s an invitation to believe again—to see the season through the eyes of a child and feel the magic of Christmas in your heart. The Polar Express in Bryson City is a testament to the resilience of a small town and the enduring power of Christmas cheer.
All aboard! The train whistle’s calling, and adventure awaits. Let the spirit of the Blue Ridge Mountains carry you away on a journey you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
